Early Literacy Tip for Parents

There will be lots of chances for you to join in and have parts in the story. It is always fun to make lots of noise, but having actions or participating in a story helps children remember the story and be able to re-tell it.

Wide Eyed Owl
Theres a wide eyed owl       (make circles over eyes)
With a pointed nose              (triangle over nose)
2 pointed ears                                   (use fingers for ears)
And claws for toes                (wiggle fingers)
He lives way up in a tree      (point high)
And when he looks at you    ( point at kids)
He flaps his wings                 (flap)
And says Hoo Hoo!

An Owl Sat Alone
An owl sat alone
On the branch of a tree                     (hold up pointer finger)
He was as quiet as he could be      (finger to lips)
It was night
And his eyes were round like this    (circles around eyes)
And when he looked around
Not a thing did he miss                     (hold hand shading eyes and peer around)

Five little owls (also flannel)
This little owl was sitting on a limb
This one flew over to play with him
This owl called whoo, whoo, whoo
This one answered “I wish I knew”
The suns coming up, this one said
And the five little owls went to bed
Good night!

Five Hoot Owls
Five hoot owls, sitting in a tree
One flew away! How many do you see?

One flew away! How many do you see?....

Rhymes and Fingerplays
Ladybugs
I saw a little ladybug flying in the air,
But when I tried to catch her, two bugs were there.

Two little ladybugs flew up in a tree.
I tiptoed very quietly, and then I saw three.

Three little ladybugs- I looked for one more,
I saw one sitting on the ground and that made four.

Four little Lady bugs- another one arrived.
I saw her sitting on a flower, and that made five.

Five little ladybugs, all red and black
I clapped my hands and shouted and they all flew back!

Itsy Bitsy Spider
I do one verse in a normal voice (the Itsy Bitsy Spider)
Then I do the Big Huge Spider in a loud low voice and my hands spread wide
Then I do the Eeency Weency Spider in a high soft voice and make tiny spider movements
Its fun if everone sings along.

Butterfly
Butterfly, Butterfly, flutter around
Butterfly, Butterfly, touch the groundqw
Butterfly, Butterfly, fly so free
Butterfly, Butterfly, land on me!
Butterfly, Butterfly, reach the sky
Butterfly, Butterfly, say goodbye

Activities
Caterpillar life cycle (egg, caterpillar, eat and grow, cocoon, butterfly)
No real rhyme or anything, but its great fun to act out the different stages.
Egg- Start curled up small and round.
Catterpillar- Then hatch into a caterpillar (kneel on knees, maybe wiggle) And what did the Very Hungry Caterpillar do? EAT! So we made eating motions and slowly stood up straight, growing into a big caterpllar.
Cocoon- Stand straight and tall and wrap arms around yourself tight. Make a joke that it can take weeks to turn into a butterfly, so get comfortable.
Butterfly- Finally- wiggle out of the cocoon as a butterfly and flap your wings
